From 1970 to 1976 I sailed around the world, from Santa Barbara, CA...west until the Caribbean Ocean. Then lived in Brasil 5 years learning the gemstone business. The Bangkok gemstone business has been my home since 1987. It took me 7 years to build my cutting factory, named GemEssence, up to 250 staff in 3 Bangkok locations, plus and office in New York. In 1998, at a trade show in the USA, a catastrophic car accident put me in a coma for weeks. After waking up from the coma...unfortunately...I went deaf. It took another 5 months in the hospital for me to recover from my amnesia and broken bones. After returning to Bangkok, my Thai partners had taken over GemEssence, so I started another business. Now I make jade carvings in Maesai: northern Thailand on the border of Burma. Still working with gemstones, I also take many business trips to Africa especially Madagascar every year to pursue my gem buying and mining interests.
